Couch surfing, temporary homelessness and the importance of linguistics.

When I chose to get an English degree people asked me what I was going to do with it, seeing as wordsmithing isn’t as bankable a trade, as say, any actual trade. But luckily for me, it taught me the importance of linguistics. After all, language is how we understand our world, and it’s so much nicer to understand things when phrased in a positive fashion. The apartment I was meant to move into on Saturday fell through, so now I’m “couch surfing”.

Take “couch surfing”, a charming term that replaces “temporary homelessness” and “burden on others” fantastically well. Or “High carb diet” instead of “diet of stale bread and ramen noodles”. Because lets face it, when life is hard and obstacles seem almost insurmountable, phrasing the problem differently may be the difference between getting through it, and well, not. Luckily for me, I am struggling in one of the most charming places on earth, surrounded by kind strangers and benefiting from the love and help of generous friends. I am both completely fucked and blessed at once. And that, is a hell of a position to be in. Wish me luck.

In other news, a dear friend is letting me sleep on his couch for a few nights. First thing I did was have a shower, fall out, break it and my arse. I now have an arse bruise the size of a boot and the colour of a dystopian sunset.

So, you know, things are looking up.
