Holiday season is upon us, and this one is a new one for me. My family is pretty traditional and we have certain things we do every year. However seeing as I accidentally moved to Germany, that somewhat goes out the window. There’s a lot different about this year’s Christmas for me, but it seems sensible thinking that if you want something to be different, it may as well be very different.
Already, German Christmas is a bit strange – especially considering I’m used to it being about 35 degrees at this time of year, and well, generally more Australian; a major difference being, in Aus all the pubs staying shut Christmas night, which is certainly not the case as here. As it turns out Christmas, is party season.
So this will be a Christmas of firsts. First true glühwein, first time I’ve had to wear thermals, first Christmas single. So I figure, if I’m going to have a strange and solo Christmas – I may as well do it in a foreign country where I don’t speak the language, have no relations and genuinely risk freezing to death. After all, in for a penny, in for a pound.
But on the other hand, I have homemade stollen, a onzie and a giant party to go to – so I’m quite enjoying the weird and fabulous German Christmas.
Though it’s always nice to have kind messages from home…
Delightful.
P.S. I have an apartment now, thank Christ. It’s adorable.
